Corcyra (Corfu), the second largest island in the Ionian sea, was a Corinthian colony. It quickly acquired its independence, however, and during the 6th c. BC developed into a major economic power and trading centre in the Adriatic. The conflict between Corcyra and Corinth in 435 BC was one of the causes of the Pelopennesian War (431-404 BC), fought between the two great alliances of the period, the Athenian and the Peloponnesian. The civil war between the oligarchs of Corcyra, supported by Corinth, and the democrats, aided by Athens, ended by weakening the island, which was unable to recover, and invariably fell under the influence of the strong powers of the times. |
