Exceptional Wines both Sparkling and Still

Tasmanian Wine producing areas can be divided into three regions.

The South- consisting of Derwent Valley, Coal River Valley and Huon.
The East Coast - Freycinet.
The North which has the Tamar Valley, Pipers River and the north west.

Visit at least one of these regions during your exploration of Tasmania. You will find wines the like of which are unobtainable elsewhere. If you are a lover of Pinot Noir , you will not be disappointed.
About half of the grapes grown in Tasmania are Pinot Noir. Over a quarter of the crop is Chardonnay. As you well know, these two varieties are essential in the making of Champagne.
The Champagne Region of France is the most northerly grape growing region. Situated at 49.19º north latitude it experiences mean mid summer temperature of 18.9º C: Annual rainfall of 630mm (45mm during the harvest month of September).
Tasmania is the most southern growing area in Australia. Situated at 41.32º south latitude it experiences mean mid summer temps of 17.7º C ; Annual rainfall of 680mm (55mm in harvest month of April). Compare the two areas – they are not dissimilar?
It will not surprise you, therefore, to find that Tasmania is the home of some surprisingly good sparkling wines. Although Australians cannot call their product “Champagne” seeing the name is jealously guarded by the French, there are many examples of sparkling wine manufactured using the traditional “Methode Champenoise” technique. Sparklings from Tasmania are held in high regard and you could well devise a touristic itinerary just sampling sparklings as you go and drinking a bottle with dinner every night.

If you can not fit in a Tasmanian Road Trip at least try the wines - both sparkling and still.
There are some very competitive prices available at the big retail wine merchants in Australia. I'll concentrate of Sparkling Wines listing some of the labels to look for..

From the northern region:

Jansz was Tasmania’s first dedicated sparkling wine vineyard. Jansz has become known as the benchmark Australian sparkling wine producer. Try some late disgorged sparkling.
Pipers Brook This internationally acclaimed, pioneering vineyard produces classic, complex Pipers Brook as well as Ninth Island & (top of the line)Kreglinger Sparkling. Do I detect some price rises since the European handbag making company Kreglinger took over??? Certainly an Eu style webpage
Clover Hill & Lalla Gully Clover Hill was established in 1986 as a dedicated sparkling wine estate planted solely to traditional sparkling wine varietals – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.Clover Hill produces a benchmark prestige sparkling wine, handcrafted from premium grapes which thrive in the rich soil and cool climate.
Freycinet Vineyards The top sparkler from this vineyard is Radenti which is a classy drop, hard to beat no matter the price bracket of the competition.
Bay of Fires Winery produces sparkling wine exhibiting a steely leanness, finely balanced by intensity of fruit flavour. Labels include Bay of Fires and Tigress range of still and sparkling wines and Australia’s prestige vintage sparkling wine, Arras. temp.web page

Southern Region:

Moorilla Estate This is a must-visit winery on the Derwent north of Hobart. The Museum was outstanding during our visit- the highlight of a visit to Tasmania. Recent building programme promises an even better experience at Moorilla.
Stefano Lubiana Wines Overlooking the tidal estuary of the Derwent River, 20 kilometres north of Hobart, Stefano Lubiana Wines is family-owned and operated, producing small quantities of hand-crafted wines including sparkling. "1995 Prestige" being top of the line.
Meadowbank Estate. Set amidst 10 hectares of vines with sweeping water views and within easy reach of Hobart, Meadowbank offers tasting facilities, restaurant & art gallery. Their sparkling wine is labeled “Mardi”.
Frogmore Creek Frogmore Creek is Tasmania’s first certified organic vineyard. Varieties include Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris. Made from 100 percent organically grown grapes, the fruit produced "gives the true flavour that nature intended". I recently used two bottles of their 2006 Riesling as the “mystery wine” at a recent Tasmanian wine night & the wine lovers present all gave it high marks.
Note: I have visited most of the establishments listed above. The couple not visited have enjoyed my patronage as a consumer.
