Kingaroy, situated two and a half hours drive north west of Brisbane, is the biggest town in the region and has assumed the mantle of the Centre of the South Burnett Wine Region. Kingaroy has long had the reputation of “Peanut Capital of Australia”. During the last dozen or so years the region’s potential to grow grapes has been realized and now there are over twenty vineyards in the area many of whom have cellar door outlets for their products which not only include wine but deli specialities such as olive oil and other olive products as well as condiments, jams, sweets etc. Kingaroy has the greatest number of accommodation options so it natural that one uses the town as a base for the food and wine tour. The local Tourist Bureau has plenty of material to set you up to enjoy your stay in the region. Maps, accommodation guides and guides to individual wineries, restaurants and other attractions are available from South Burnett Visitor Information Centre(s) in Kingaroy, Blackbutt, Murgon, Nanango and Wondai and on the web site. Derivation of the name "Kingaroy" - A corruption of Aboriginal words, Waka language, "king" meaning small black ants and "dhurai" meaning hungry. |
| | High Quality Cheese Kingaroy Cheese Co. has earned a reputation for the quality of the cheese produced. The old butter factory in the town has been converted to cheese making and the on-site outlet caters for lunches of Regional Product Platters including their own cheeses and, of course, local wines. Kingaroy Cheese (open 10am-6pm Daily except Good Friday & Christmas Day) 67 William St., Kingaroy. (07) 4162 5990. Approx. Lat & Long : 26º32'00.80"S ; 151º50'05.20"E |

| | Peanuts Plus OK I have to mention peanuts. Also the excellent beef cattle, navy beans and an unusual crop, the Corkwood tree or Duboisia, from which the drug hyoscine is obtained. This is used commercially for medicines and antiseptics. Outdoors types can visit several national parks in the Burnett Area: Bunya Mountains National Park - This NP protects the last remaining Bunya Pine Forest. It's a great bird watching area. Benarkin State Forest & Forest reserve - If you take a year off to walk the 5,330 km Australian Bicentenary National Trail from Healesville in Victoria to Cooktown in northern Queensland, you will pass through this Reserve. Boat Mountain Conservation Park - Walking tracks and great views. Mudlo National Park - visit native Hoop Pine forests. The Palms National Park - check out the stands of ancient piccabeen palms. |
