L'Esprit Nouveau The Swiss-born artist, Le Corbusier (1887 - 1965) was one of the most influential architects of the 20th century. Through his writing and his buildings, he is the main player in the Modernist story. His designs were built world-wide. Check out the Villa La Roche a reinforced concrete structure built in 1924 at Auteuil. His radical ideas were given full expression in his 1923 book Vers Une Architecture ("Towards a New Architecture"), which is still the best-selling architecture book of all time. "A house", Le Corbusier wrote, "is a machine for living in." Le Corbusier Foundation maintains two of his pioneering structures (circa 1923) plus a library devoted to his works, life and achievements at Auteuil, in s.w. Paris (a couple of blocks west of Radio France). You may need to consult a map to find it but is well worth the visit. A real eye opener re modern architecture. Any one even remotely interested in the lives of Napoleon & Josephine Bonaparte should have a visit to their home, Malmaison, high on their list of 'Must See Places' while in or near Paris. The couple set up house there in 1800 and after the divorce Josephine resided there supervising the extensive gardens and the menagerie of exotic animals which included Australian fauna brought back by the Baudin Expedition. I like to think Josephine had a particular fondness for the Western Australian Black Swans which having mated, remain so for life. The Museum at the chateau and the one nearby at Chateau Bois-Preau can be visited on a combined ticket (or your Paris Museum Pass) so allow a full day for the visit as they are located outside of Paris central. We have to return to see the latter museum as our attempts to get a taxi at the Railway Station at Reuil failed early in the day because there were none available. The lady at the tourist office kindly drove us to the site after spending an hour or so ringing taxis for us also without success. Don't let that put you off. It is worth the effort to get there.Chateau de Malmaison , avenue du Chateau de Malmaison, 92500 Rueil-Malmaison Musee de Bois-Preau, Chateau de Bois-Preau 1, avenue de l' Imperatrice Josephine, 92500 Rueil-Malmaison Recommended access from Paris is RER A, La Defense-Grande Arche + bus 258 Info in English

Nemorino Fri Oct 23, 2009 22:58 UTC Me again, coming back to see what sort of updates you have added to your Paris page since February 5, 2007. Auteuil is one of the few Paris districts I have never been to, and your Le Corbusier tip gives me one more reason to go there. | Jerelis Mon Aug 10, 2009 11:21 UTC Very well written tips on Paris Peter.
