If my kind reader has read my other pages, then you already know that I like the small towns dotted through out the state of São Paulo. São Luis is particularly pictoresque.
Cobblestone streets, men trading farming tips on the square and three lovely churches set the tone of this village.
If you visit on an ordinary day, everything seems sleepy and quiet. However, it has one of the most tradional Carnaval in São Paulo, holding most of the old fashioned traditions. No ladies with bare breasts, but lots of parades, with huge puppets and bands. The music is "marchinha". and not samba or axé.
But if you don't want to miss a day of Carnaval in Rioor Salvador, visit São Luis the week before, when the songs are chosen for the parties. |
