Fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, nuts, spices, oil and wine - there's a bit of everything to do with food in the Central Market. From gourmet cooks to housewives, all sorts of people visit the market to shop and chat.

Walk aroud the different sectors and enjoy the sights!

Apart from all the food and ingredients, both local and imported, the building itself is beautiful and has wonderful stained glass windows portraing the different origins of food products and how the were obtained (in a highly idealized fashion!) in the early XX century.

After looking around, head to the loft area to have a nice cold beer and snacks made from the products sold below.

Directions: Take the metro to São Bento Station

The most traditional theater for classical music and performances! From Luciano Pavarotti to the Bolshoi Ballet, this stage has seen it all! Not mention the great brazilian artists who call it home...

If the performances are not to your taste, then visit the theater for its architecture (modelled on the Paris Opera) and great guided tours (free - tuesdays to fridays, from 12:00 to 14:00) and exhibitions with the costume of former performances, pictures and stories of all the great artists.

Most people hurry right past the Santa Catarina Hospital on Av Paulista. But stop for a few minutes to look at the collection of bronze plaques on the walls, entitled "Life".

Created by Marcos Ulgheri, they tell of mankind's struggle to survive, highlighting the medical developements from antiquity to the present day.

Each plaque has an image and an inscription (which is not directly related to the picture, but makes up a poem if read across all the plaques).
