Lewiston, Idaho

We were in Lewiston en route to a bike rally in Baker City, Oregon. We rode from Couer d'Alene to Baker City on this Day. The ride down 95 out of CDA was fairly unassuming until just outside of Lewiston. The highway drops down, down, down into Lewiston. The view from the top is pretty spectacular.

We had burnt the tires off the bike the day before and we rode into town looking for the Harley Davidson dealer. We were delighted to spot Shumate Harley Davidson as we came into town. We were even more delighted when they agreed to squeeze us in ahead of a pile of guys who already had appointments. (Sorry guys!) With their great service and great prices as well, we made it into Baker City in time for the kick off of the Hells Canyon Motorcycle Rally that night. Great service - thanks again Shumate HD!

Lewiston to Enterprise - The Rattlesnake Canyon

When we left the Harley shop, we headed for Asotin, WA, where we fueled up the bike. From Asotin the road climbs & climbs until you finally reach a high plateau which the roads snakes across for about 25 miles. The sky started looking mighty black & lightning was snaking across the sky around us, so we stopped at Anatone to put on our leather coats & chaps.

When we left Anatone we quickly began our descent into the Rattlesnake Canyon. This is without a doubt the most amazing road we have ever been on with the bike! You drop down for what seems like forever and cross the Grande Rounde River. After a couple of miles riding across the valley floor, we began our ascent up the other side of the canyon.

It was raining quite enthusiastically during this entire section of the ride - all the way down and all the way back up - but we didn't care. The views were breathtaking.

The Ride to Enterprise Oregon

We had to stop at Chief Joseph view point so I could get my rain gear on & Big Al took some photos of the canyon. None turned out too well, unfortunately, because the clouds were hanging in over the canyon. Maybe next trip.

If you are thinkin about doing this ride, I should warn you that Asotin is the last place to get fuel before you get to Enterprise, a distance of about 70 miles. So regardless of which direction you're heading, make sure you fuel up before you head into the canyon.

This is a ride that you will definitely enjoy. Bring your camera.

(I can't take credit for this picture - it's a postcard! The weather was not conducive to taking a lot of our own pictures.)

Rain or no rain, you got some great scenic shots of your route through the mountains there! This looks like beautiful countryside. I enjoyed your 'in-built' travelogue.
