We never got to spend much time in San Francisco, but it quickly impressed me as being a place I want to go back to spend more time exploring.
There are so many things to see and do here - there's so much more to this beautiful city than Alcatraz! Incidentally, if you are planning on taking the Alcatraz tour, make SURE you reserve this online weeks in advance! You can't just walk up to the ticket counter and get on the next tour, as we found out! The website is at

Fisherman's Wharf is a great spot to stroll around and just people watch. There are buskers everywhere, and our children were delighted by them.
The architecture in the city is unbelievable! |
| | The Golden Gate Bridge If you are coming into SF from the north, this will be the first thing you see in SF. Watch for an area on your right, just before you get onto the bridge, where you can pull off the highway and park. You can walk across the parking lot, and there is a pedestrian walkway that goes under the highway, providing you with access to the Golden Gate interpretive center. It's a great place to take pictures of the bridge before you head into the city. |
| | Alcatraz As I've already stated, make sure you make your reservations in advance! |
