Winding streets with lots of character The third largest city on Crete, Rethymnon/Rethimno still feels very small, mostly because of the tiny, carless streets of the old city. Some of them will instantly remind you of Venice if you have been there, and this may not be coincidence -- the city was once ruled by Venetians, and is home to the world's largest Venetian fort/castle.
Easily connected to Chania and Iraklio by busses, there is also a ferry that arrives and leaves for Piraus (Athens) every day, and one for Santorini twice a week, making this an easily accessible Cretan city that retains some of the easy going, relaxed charm of a quiet village.
We arrived here on the second night of our honeymoon, and it quickly became one of our favourite places on earth. |
