Probably in the best part of town, within walking distance of both Universities and located in a quiet street parallel to the principal shopping /nightclub/ theatre/pub/art gallery /people watching street. Opposite the main library with free internet access and it just gets better when you enter the hostel.
1 Overall level of carpeting ,decor ,style and furnishings are well above standard even surpassing hotels and to illustrate my point, padding along to the showers on quality axminster wilton carpeting is as delightful as walking on grass barefoot.
2Showers are instant ,private, hot and not tiny cubicles; they all have private changing areas and are well equipt with cleaning utensils so you can leave it ready for the next person.
3 The garden patios are a delight to the eye, very secluded, well kept and the variety of plants in pots and hanging baskets are a colourful site to meditate on while you enjoy your morning coffee.
4Coffee, ground not horrible instant and a quality blend like the choice of tisanes with teapots not merely cups and mugs. Its the attention to detail with these little practicalities which made my stay quiet outstanding and at every level a lot of thought had gone into the behind the scene minituia of day to day, lets make this place the kind of place we,d like to arrive at. Going out on a tangent for a minute many places have book exchange shelves. Here they have a floor to ceiling wall to wall english library in one room and a second room has books in german, french and castilian. Just like to say well done Fiona and your crew you made my stay a delight. Thankyou.
5 Had this been a boring run of the mill place I would never have been introduced to so much of Scotland's and Glasgow's culture. Every city should have a place like this. Should be renamed planet fun because thats exactly what it was for me and everyone I met there felt the same. Don't miss it.
Unique Qualities: Design. A hall with 700 years of franco scottish history depicting the worlds oldest political alliance, a hall with the life of william wallace the cities favourite son, guides to get to his birthplace, school, battle within the city, point of betrayal; not i hasten to correct hollywoods myths by robert but an English knight Sir Jon Montieth who is the reason why the Lake of Mentieth is the only Lake in the country! A statue of Liberty in the courtyard, fine exhibits of the Burrell art collection, the worlds third biggest art collection and its free admission. Then there are halls and stairways introducing you to the works of Margaret and Charles Rennie MacIntosh. I am sure you get the picture of just why i enjoyed Glasgow and this backpackers so much.
I read a previous review about Burns night and was lucky enough to participate this year. Knowing nothing about it when i arrived i can safely say if you can find one going on in your area join in. I read poetry, ate, danced and listened to poetry and songs AND MUSIC. Truly a great experience to a writer whose writing I am now chasing up. Ayr, where he was born is a great day trip from central station. You can visit his house, favourite bars {HOWFFS?} and interesting spots where he wrote his poems and about places he mentioned as locations for events in his poetry.
the Library across street has been refurbished, now houses twice the amount of free internet access.
