The City That Doesn't Act Big

Bergamo is a city that lies near Milano and so it does not get the tourist hoards of that frequent the big historical cities of northern Italy. However, it is a charming city that deserves at least one day to find its treasures.
If your time is limited you should start in Bergamo Alto where you can enjoy the great view and visit the shops and old historical area. There you will find many local made artifacts, great food, a museum, and a super tower to climb, which has an elevator which makes it easier.
At the top your view of the entire city below and the villages nearby is so picturesque, and if the weather is good you can have a great view of the snow covered mountains just north of the city.
If you are interested in Bergamo you may find the photos in this page interesting and they will give you a good idea of what there is to experience in Bergamo.
Bergamo was a Roman town (Bergomum) began in 196 bc. Destroyed by none other than Attila the Hun, it became the seat of a Lombard duchy and in the 12th became an independent commune. century. The Milanese Visconti family ruled after 1329, then it passed in 1428 to Venice until 1797. You can see several visual refereces to the Venician rule in Bergamo Alto.

View From Below

Here is the view of Begamo Alto from the streets below. This area of Bergamo, the main city was built mainly after the French rule of Napoleon. Bergamo was the capitol city after Mussolini moved north in World War II.

Another view from above

If you like to get above a city and see the neighboring towns, Bergamo is the place to go. Below the big tower are many different historical buildings, and the rooftops make so many different interesting shapes. I recommend going to the top of the tower over all other activities that the city has to offer.
