Cutting Corners and Still Enjoying Venice | view from the ferry boat arriving from the camping |
We are teachers and able to stay in Europe for the summer. In order to pull this off financially we sometimes have gone the camping route, taking equipment over and buying some there. We never realized that across the water from Venice are a great number of campgrounds. The guidebooks don't discuss this very much. But on the internet you can find lots of information. Google camping venice. To get to Venice you get to take a 20 minute affordable boat ride. So you get to enter Venice the way the old merchants entered which makes from many a great photo op. You can also get to the other islands and see glass blowing or visit an old cemetary or just take pictures of the colorful houses. Read up on the islands of Venice and you will know which ones you want to visit. The campgrounds are listed by stars....Some have attendants in white uniforms meeting you as you drive in. This is not your American campground experience if you do that sort of thing. The restrooms are cleaned several times a day, hot showers are available and there will be a small restaurant and store. The only thing negative about European camping is that you are closer to other campers than you are used to. I am working on a page to show camping and discuss it further. Soon to come. |
| | A closer view coming in to port The ferry boat will arrive just to the right of the square. You will begin your day right at the center of the historical area. Make sure you know what boat you will return on. There are many boats going in all different directions. |
| | Take a canal ride Don't just take a gondola ride. Take the local ferry bus through the canals. You will come across places you have seen in photos but wouldn't know how to find. This scene is one that many painters love to paint. I have seen this numerous times, and if you hop on a boat (like a city bus, but on water) you will see it, too. |

| Pros: | "You can see it on a budget if you plan ahead" | | Cons: | "Food is expensive and overated" | | In A Nutshell: | "You have to visit Venice at least once." |
