This town was a real suprise. Most towns on both sides of the inter-german border have suffered from years of neglect. Even many towns in the west look run down and neglected. After all, who wanted to live next to a security zone full of guns? East Germany, being communist, didn't have a very good environmental record. Lack of funds and pollution turned the east a shade of grey. Even today, some towns in the east still have a run-down appearance.

Some cities(such as Meiningen) quickly tried to brighten the cities up by painting the buildings bright colors. Thats what made Behrungen such a suprise. While looking for the deutsch-deutches museum, I had to go through Behrungen. As I approached, I just expected another run-down grey village. What a suprise! Almost the entire town has been accurately restored to it's former look. Unfortunately, I have found no signs or information about why this one little village has been so well restored. Most of the other villages aren't as nice. So, if you're taking a road trip, looking for the border museum, stop and take a look. It's like a walk back in time.

On the other hand, the church looks as if it's about to fall over! My guess is that everybody was working so hard on the town, they forgot the church. It looks abandoned. There were no signs with any information on services, and the door was locked. The plaster has fallen off the outer walls, revealing the bare rock underneath.

Have never been here but the name was known to me probably thanks to my journey '03 across Germany.
