No wonder Diocletian was so eager to retire | Diocletian's Palace in Split, Croatia |
Over the last five years, Croatia's Dalmacijan coast has become one of Europe's hottest destinations. Its appeal, however, goes back much further than that.
When the Roman Empire faced strife regarding succession early in the fourth century A.D., Diocletian opted for retirement. Anyone who has been to his palace in Split can see why he made this decision.
Built in 293 A.D., the palace is one of the most well-preserved Roman structures. It is an open-air museum with plenty of shops and sights. Changes that have been made over the years have only enhanced its beauty. |

| | A palace that became a city The palace Diocletian built for himself was so large that, centuries later, it became a city. The citizens of Salona sought refuge behind the palace's walls following an invasion by the Avars in 639 A.D. Today, many of the people living in Split's old town claim ancestry from those people.
Split is a great place to spend a day or two before heading south to Dubrovnik. |
