Bait Wakil Hotel: The best hospitality I have ever experienced
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The Beit Wakil is a 450-year-old building that has been faithfully restored to its original form. The courtyard is amazing, as is the lobby. Habib, the hotel manager, is very friendly and helpful. If you need something and the hotel does not have it, they will send someone to get it for you. For example, I asked them where I could find a phone card. Twenty minutes later someone from the hotel brought one to my room. Upon arriving, I asked Habib where I could find an ATM. He gave me directions, but he also borrowed me 2,500 Syrian pounds, which is about $50. I did not ask for it, he just gave it to me.

Unique Qualities: The rooms are simple, but Habib explained that he wanted guests to have as much of an authentic experience as possible. He wanted the building to look like it did 450 years ago, with a few added luxuries such as air conditioning and full-size bathrooms in each room. The breakfast, which is included in the price, is very good. Rooms go for $100 per night, plus 11-percent tax.

Diwan Ramsy Hotel: Stay in a 15th-century home
  • Tip Rating:
  • Like Beit Wakil, Diwan Ramsy was recently converted into a boutique hotel. The building is from the 15th century, with the rooms being a blend of the old and the new. It is in the Christian quarter, not far from Aleppo's main attractions.

i got lost in the citadel and it took awhile for me to wander the grounds and finally find the front entrance again. Its a fascinating place to see, the various little rooms, theatre, etc.
