A city in the desert

While Syria may be a well-kept secret among American travelers, the rest of the world has known about it for years. This is evident by the busloads of Japanese and French tourists flooding the ruins of Palmyra, Syria’s top archeological site.

Ride the camel!

Built on the edge of an oasis, the sandstone ruins of the 2,000-year-old desert city are extensive and well-preserved. The best way of seeing them is by riding a camel. For about $10, a Bedouin, the romanticized nomads of the Arabian desert, will guide you and your camel through the ruins for a 30-minute tour.
