Known as the city of peace, Jerusalem's turbulent history has created the unltimate paradox. Founded by King David, the shepherd who battled Goliath with a rock and a sling, Jerusalem has been fought over by various armies for more than 2,000 years.
When talking about Jerusalem, keep in mind that there are two parts of the city. There is the walled Old City, which is where the major sights are located. The New City is where most of the hotels and restaurants are located. |
| The area near the Western Wall |
| | Two or three days more than enough If planned properly, the major sights can be visited in two days. This does not include day trips to Bethlahem, the Dead Sea or Masada. One of the amazing things about Jerusalem is how close so many historical sights are to each other. In some cases, one historical place is literally on top of the other.
The three main sights inside the Old City are the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Supulchre and the Temple Mount area which includes the Dome of the Rock and Al Aqsa mosque. |
| | Safety concerns in Jerusalem Jerusalem has not been struck by terrorists in some time and is not considered to be a target due to its spiritual importance. That being said, travelers need to be vigilant. There have been robberies in the Old City, especially at night. |
