Millions of years ago, the tectonic plates underneath the earth shifted. This movement caused a rift in the ground where the northeast border of Argentina meets Brasil. If it wasn’t for the Rio Iguacu being there, this location would not matter to tourists.
This prehistoric event created one of nature’s great wonders, Iguacu Falls. The fact that this magnificent site is in the middle of a jungle makes it one of the world’s most exotic destinations.
There are 275 waterfalls of varying size. If you are planning a trip to Iguacu Falls, you will need at least one full day to visit the Argentinean side and a half-day for the Brasilian side. Two nights and three days would be ideal, as it would allow you to visit both sides and possibly take a jungle or river tour. The best times to visit are during the spring and fall. The summer months can be extremely hot and humid.
Whether you arrive by land or air, one thing is evident. You are in the middle of nowhere! We flew in from Rio De Janeiro and all we could see were trees for miles and miles. Besides visitng the national parks on the Brasilian and Argentinian sides, there is not much to do there. Foz do Iguacu in Brasil is a virtual ghost town and Puerto Iguazu in Argentina is not much better. If you cannot stay in one of the hotels inside the national parks, find a hotel in Puerto Iguazu.
Visiting Iguacu Falls is an amazing experience. It is worth all the troubles you may encounter when planing a trip there. Just do not expect much from the neighboring towns.
