Lago Albano Travel Guide: 9 reviews and 24 photos

And now for Castel Gandolfo fun!

Lago Albano, in an area called Castelli Romani, is the volcanic crater lake associated with Castel Gandolfo, believed to have been formed when the two prehistoric craters of the Lazio Volcanio merged into one. It is the summer residence of the Pope. Located in the Alban Hills of Lazio, 15 miles southeast of Rome, on a height of 961 feet (293 m) above sea level.

Named Albanus Lacus by the Roman Empire, it is the deepest (170 m) in Lazio. It is about 3.5 km long by 2.3 km wide, formed by the overlapping union of two volcanic craters, an origin indicated by the ridge in its center, which rises to a depth of 70 meters.

Nature enthusiasts will find plenty to pique their arborial and aquatic interests at pristine Lake Albano.

Lake Albano continued its fiery path to glory when it hosted the 1960 Olympic canoe races. The lane marking system developed for these events is commonly referred to as the Albano buoy system. The crystal clear water still tempts travelers with opportunities for swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and sun bathing.

Below Castel Gandolfo you will find a vast array of water sports and a most unique garden beach - "Spiaggia Verde" with an eclectic mix of young adult locals and Romans - few tourists know of this spot.

Caio, Carol. Mia amica. La Perla looks favoloso. I believe my white dinner jacket would go with the decor. Bellini in one hand and caviar bruschetta in the other. Paradiso, Larry

I think I would like to sip on something too while watching the action down by the lake! Lago Albano seems to be very popular with the locals.
