A snippet from our Rome page - enjoy..............
CONCERNED ABOUT TOO MANY CARBS IN YOUR DIET? For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting medical studies.
1. Japanese are known to eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.
2. Mexican people may eat a lot of fat and carbohydrates but still suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.
3. Chinese people generally drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.
4. The Italians may drink excessive amounts of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.
5. German people drink a lot of beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.
CONCLUSION: Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

Warnings Or Dangers: FAKE DESIGNER TRADE IN ITALY
|

This note was posted recently by gial1 and I wanted to repeat it here.
I realize people believe they are getting a big bargain when they buy fake designer products and I realize this trend will continue. I just hope that buyers might pause to consider the consequences of all this trade for the hard-working Italian people - not just the high profile designers themselves - but the little guy down the chain who works in the factory, distributes, delivers, shop owners, clerks in those shops. This fake trade has a tremendous impact on the economy of the Italy you all say you adore.
Yes - there are laws in Italy that prohibit the sale AND the purchase -- no, these laws are not enforced anywhere near the extent that they should be. I witnessed agents sweep fake merchandise off tables by Trevi - arrest those few sellers who did not run -- only to have them return about a week later. Consider also that the sweep could occur at any time - even as you are making your big bargain purchase. The consumer fine for purchasing fake goods is 3,333 € and if not paid promptly it escalates after 2 months to 10,000 €.
This fine will apply equally to all transactions regardless of the price of the fake goods, thus a € 10 pair of fake designer sunglasses may end up costing you more than the budget of your trip.
Here is what gial1 had to say: This is just an information to all those who want to come to Italy for vacation. In Italy there is a law which states that if someone buys a fake product from abusive street sellers (Gucci Prada D&G etc bags, sunglasses, belts, wallets and so on) he can get a fee of more than 1500 euros. I already saw tourists in my town (Florence) who were stopped by the police because they were buying fake products in the street and had to pay a fee. so be careful

Just received the following note from a friend who was here in Rome and returned to Florence. Well we journeyed to Firenze and arrived intact. Only 5 gypsies approached us at the Rome termini. The last two helped us put our luggage on the train and while Pat was asking me if she should give a tip the one gal had her hand in Pat's purse!!!!!!!!!! Pat yelled at her and I not knowing what was up gave the gal 2 euros. Pat was still is shock trying to explain and I didn't comprehend until I had already given her the euros. She proceeded down the aisle of the train talking to folks until she approached a priest and he started in with a lecture and the two of them emgaged a major debate!!!! So we vowed after this experience that we would, no matter how difficult the task with the luggage, that we would assist "ourselves" and need not outside aid. BUT as soon as we started to unload at the Firenze termani, a young man asked to help and we said YES!!!! hahaha!!! He was a passenger on the train. I personally thought the two that helped us in Rome were passengers......no.......gypsies........ Well - Ms Gypsy, if you see me and a bear in a phone booth - help the bear!
