I have become a frequent visitor to London and have seen this city and the surrounding areas from a tourist and local point of view. Of course, being a Yank (what the Brits call Americans) I am still looked at as a tourist. My partner was born and raised in Essex which is a large area just East of London so because of him I have become well versed on London.

Since VT is for tourists I'll go at this from that direction. London is very expensive, flights to London(the increasing air taxes!), public transportation, food, lodging, and with the current exchange rate for USD to Poud Sterling it's even worse for we poor yanks! So, get over this fact, be prepared to spend some money but you can still get the best deal for your money.

Dining: I've been lucky with Lastminute.com and click on "restaurants", I've found dinner at some very good London Restaurants that has saved us at least 50% on dinner with some deals offering tickets to a theater as well.

Another favorite is Pub Food. It's plentiful, very good for the most part and you can try some local brews with your meal. I've seen Dinner and a pint for GBP7-10 at many London pubs. Keep an eye out for specials.
