Jalal - Abad means a city (=abad) built by a man named Jalal. The man's complete name is Jalaludin Mohammad Akbar in 630 and he is the descendent of Mughal Emperor. It is located in the middle between Peshawar and Kabul, precisely after passing Khyber Agency / Pass. This city is considered safe enough for the local community - which is very different than the area of Khyber Agency that is very dangerous because so many fightings occured among the tribals.
I have been working, coming, and going to Jalalabad since end of 2007. Jalalabad is green city, always green in all seasons no matter how extreme the weather is as in summer it can reach 45C. On the contrary,
Jalalabad is always a favorite place for Kabulis to escape the freezing temperature and enjoy "warmer" weather.
All the pictures in my page were taken from inside the vehicles. Until the time I built this page, it is not advisable for expatriates to walk in the city.
People of Jalalabad is friendly and simple, though culturally very sensitive especially for women in the middle of male dominant society.
I hardly see women walk in the city freely alone without men accompany. Burqa is absolutely important as traditional clothes to "protect" themselves.
I am lucky enough to capture this woman without burqa.
HOWEVER, living as expatriate in this city, there is not much activities to do daily. Moreover, the threat of kidnapping makes me always in 24/7 alert. To stay inside the compound is advisable.
Preparation of enough "foreign food stock" such as peanut butter, nutella ... and other body treatment :) such as lotion, sun screen, good quality of shampoo are necessary. NO JOKE!
- Pros:HOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTT
- Cons:smell of orange in autumn
