  • Built in the 19th century as a museum, this gorgeous red brick building is home to an impressive collection of art, including masterpieces by Rembrandt and Vermeer. These works of art make the Rijksmuseum one of the top attractions in Amsterdam. It should be one of your first stops in the city.

  • Some of Rembrandt's greatest works (17th century), such as The Night Watch, are exhibited at the Rijksmuseum. Attached are a couple of examples. Rembrandt is one of Holland's most celebrated artists.

  • Famous paintings by the 17th century artist, Vermeer, are exhibited in the Rijksmuseum. One such example is the Milkmaid (see picture) which is the artist's masterpiece. Vermeer is another one of Holland's most celebrated artists.

  • On display at the Rijksmuseum is the most amazing dollhouse dating back to the 17th century. The dollhouse belonged to Petronella Oortman, who owned the house as an adult. The details in the house are astonishing.

Dam Square - De Nieuwe Kerk: De Nieuwe Kerk

  • De Nieuwe Kerk, which translates to The New Church, was originally built in the 15th century at Dam Square, the heart of the city. The church was completely destroyed in a fire in the 17th century and was subsequently rebuilt and restored to its former glory. Today, De Nieuwe Kirk serves as an art exhibition hall, but perhaps the greatest art on display is the church's magnificent Gothic architecture itself!

Dam Square - Royal Palace: Koninklijk Paleis

  • The most imposing building on Dam Square, the heart of Amsterdam, is Koninklijk Paleis or the Royal Palace. Originally built as the City Hall (and to me, still looks like one), it was converted to the Royal Palace in the 17th Century (the Netherlands is a kingdom to this day!).

  • The magnificent Magna Plaza nowadays is a busy shopping centre just off Dam Square (next to De Nieuwe Kerk). It was built at the end of the 19th century as the city's post office and was later transformed into a shopping centre. This beautiful building is a fine example of Dutch architecture.

  • Undoubtedly, the Canals of Amsterdam grace the city with its unique character, a Venice of the north of sorts. Not only do the canals provide a scenic backdrop to the city, but they also serve as an efficient means of transportation. A boat tour of the city is a fantastic way to see the city, but a stroll along the canals can be most enjoyable and peaceful. Choose either, or do both!

I hope you can have a longer (and drier) return visit to Amsterdam sometime. I rented a bicycle when I was there and had a great time riding all around.
