Córdoba قرطبة

Where is that blue Andalusian sky?
Serving as the capital of al-Andalus during the zenith of the Arab caliphate, Córdoba is home to some of the most astonishing architectural achievements of that period, namely la Mezquita, the Great Mosque. The city was also one of the most thriving commercial and educational centres of Europe of the period, one which practised exemplary religious tolerance. As a result, Christians and Jews lived alongside Moslems. La Judería, the Jewish neighbourhood, remains largely intact since those days and contains one of the last remaining synagogues in Spain dating from before the inquisition. Córdoba slowly declined after the Christian takeover, though this decline has helped to preserve some of its Moorish character more than other cities in Andalucía.
Dazzling Arches
Córdoba was one of the cities I visited during a tour of Andalucía in February 2005. While I was there, a major several-day rain storm swept through southern Spain following a two-month drought. Needless to say, the cold rain dampened my experience and made sightseeing rather challenging, so I've promised myself to visit Andalucía again in the future during drier, warmer months...
Moorish Arches, Gothic Ceiling
When visiting southern Spain, Córdoba is a must see! The city can be seen in a day, though two days could easily be filled if the intinerary included the nearby Medina Azahara, the ruins of a great Moorish palace.

Andalucía itinerary in February 2005:

Sevilla - Granada - Málaga - Córdoba - Sevilla
