Part of the stylish Room Mate hotel chain, Mario is one of several in Madrid. For the design-conscious among us, this hotel is heaven as it incorporates fashionable design elements in its rooms, lobby and dining room. Though simple and basic, the rooms are quite spacious and extremely comfortable, priced at €150 per night. The location is perfectly close to most of Madrid's major monuments, such as Plaza Mayor, Palacio Real and Gran Vía.

Commissioned by King Alfonso XIII, the Ritz Hotel was built to rival its namesake hotel in Paris. The hotel was completed in 1910 under the supervision of Cesar Ritz, the famous hotelier, and was built in the Parisian belle epoque style. The hotel continues to be among Madrid's most famous luxury hotels. I did not stay here, but the Ritz does not need recommendation, of course. Its location across from the Prado Museum is perfect for visiting Madrid, if you can afford the bill.

Much like its neighbouring Ritz, the Westin Palace was given the royal nod by King Alfonso XIII. The hotel opened its doors in 1912 as one of Madrid's most luxurious hotels. The palace of Duque de Medinaceli was torn down for the construction of this belle époque hotel. This historic hotel is most famous for its art nouveau glass dome in its interior and continues to be a symbol of luxury in Madrid. I did not stay here, but walked in to see the beautiful glass dome. When in Madrid, why not stop by for some tea under the glass dome after a long day at the Prado?
