One of the most recognisable churches in Rome (perhaps only second to Saint Peter's), Trinità dei Monti stands dominant above Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti (Spanish Steps). The church dates from the 16th century and recently underwent extensive restoration work to bring it to its current beautiful whitewashed form.

Named after the recognisable twin towered church, Trinità dei Monti, this piazza is graced with one of the best views of Rome. It is located at the top of la Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti (Spanish Steps) and overlooks the Piazza di Spagna and Via Condotti, and has views extending all the way to the Vatican and St Peter's. Yet another obelisk is mounted in the centre of the piazza, but this one in fact was made by the Romans as a copy of Ancient Egyptian obelisks. Going up the Spanish Steps to this piazza is highly recommended at least for its views , especially at sunset (see photos). In early 2005, the church itself was covered in scaffolding due to restoration work.

In the 17th century, the French owners of Trinità dei Monti (the church at the top of the Spanish Steps) decided to link their church with the Piazza di Spagna and built the beautiful steps that have become an important landmark and a favourite hangout in Rome. Make sure you sit on the steps on a sunny day and observe everything and everyone around you.

The most famous square in Rome, Piazza di Spagna, owes its name to the fact that the piazza was considered Spanish territory for a while during its history. Along with the Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti (known as the Spanish Steps in English) it is a favourite hangout, day or night, among Romans and tourists alike. The piazza is graced with a Bernini fountain and surrounded by stunning Italianate architecture. It is also where the famous Via Condotti meets the Spanish Steps.

One of the most famous streets in Rome, Via Condotti runs from the bottom of the Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti (Spanish Steps) at Piazza di Spagna to the busy Via del Corso. Along both sides of Via Condotti, as well as in the branching streets, lie the most luxurious names in Italian and world fashion. A stroll down Via Condotti is a must for visitors to Rome, if not to shop then to enjoy the fantastic view of the Spanish Steps.

Rome's most famous fountain was sculpted in the 18th century by artists from Bernini's school. The sculptures are definitely stunning, but unfortunately, the piazza is infested with hords of tourists and is hardly relaxing. The calmest time to visit Fontana di Trevi is late at night. Throw in a coin (or two) to ensure your return to Rome!

This elegant multi-columned church occupies a lucky position facing the Trevi Fountain. The beauty of the church is most likely ignored completely by visitors who are fixated on the monumental fountain across the piazza. Chiesa dei Santi Vincenzo ed Anastasio was rebuilt in the 17th century, replacing an older church. The work was paid for by Giulio Mazarino (Jules Mazarin), the Italian Cardinal who became minister of France and whose name appears in Latin (IVLIVUS MAZARINUS) on the façade of the church.

The church of San Marcello is located on the busy Via del Corso. It contains the relics of Pope Marcellus. The church was built in the 16th century after a fire destroyed the previous structure, which dated back to the 8th century. The existing concave Baroque façade, however, was added in the late 17th century and was designed by Carlo Fontana.

Serving the Lombard community of Rome since 1471, the Basilica dei Santi Ambrogio e Carlo is dedicated to two Saints from Milano, Sant'Ambrogio (died in 397) and San Carlo Barromeo (in 1610). The grand Baroque structure dates from the early 17th century when the basilica was rebuilt. It is located on the busy Via del Corso, not too far from Via Condotti.

One of the more famous squares in Rome, Piazza del Popolo was designed to resemble St Peter's Square. An Ancient Egyptian obelisk is mounted in the middle of the square. Surrounding the piazza are the twin domed churches of Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria in Montesanto on one side, and Porta del Popolo and the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, to which the piazza owes its name, on the other. Overlooking the piazza is Pincio Hill, a small park adjacent to Villa Borghese. Piazza del Popolo is a popular place to hang out and it is where New Year's Eve festivities take place in Rome.
