Leon's Palace Lobby, May 2009
I am writing this tip quite a while after I stayed here. It was for one night in May 2009, but my stay was quite memorable. The hotel is a member of www.designhotels.com, a group which emphasises design concepts, as the name indicates. Leon's Palace is housed in a beautiful Liberty Style building (i.e. Italy's version of Belle Epoque), contrasted with an ultra-modern refurbished interior. The room and the hotel were comfortable and very pleasant, at a price considerably less than most luxury hotels in Rome. The only drawback, which is probably why it is more affordable, is that it is located a bit of a distance from the city centre, via XX Settembre, but this thoroughfare contains numerous buses that go directly to via Veneto and the Centro Storico.

View from the hotel room - Jan 2010
Named after its street number, Fortyseven Hotel is small boutique hotel at a great location in Foro Boario, in the heart of historic Rome. It has magical views of the Tiber River and the Roman temples of the Forum Boarium. The rooms are spacious, elegant and equipped with small luxuries, while prices are not as astronomical as similar hotels in central Rome. The top floor contains a restaurant and lounge with excellent panoramic views. Fortyseven is my new favourite hotel in Rome!

Hotel Entrance
Aleph is a fairly new hotel designed by a New York-famous architect Adam Tihany, who contrasted the belle epoque building with a strikingly modern exotic interior and its shades of reds and burgundy. With an address just off Via Veneto and close to all the luxury boutiques, the location could not be more convenient. The hotel offers excellent service, a full spa, and 5 star amenities in beautifully decorated, though somewhat small, rooms. For my first stay in January 2005, I was lucky enough to be upgraded to a room with a private terrace larger than the room itself (see photo)! My second stay in April 2007 was just as great, but no terrace unfortunately. The spa was also closed for repair work. A drink at the sinfully red bar on the ground floor is a must.
