Wine bar near the Colosseum - Rome
Divin Ostilia: Wine bar near the Colosseum

This tiny wine bar, Divin Ostilia, is located a block east of the Colosseum, in the quaint residential neighbourhood of Celio. The tiny wine bar serves delicious Italian food, from a variety of tasty bruschette, to a variety of pasta and meat dishes, all accompanied by a large selection of Italian wines. There is covered outdoor seating for better weather, and the place is open from early afternoon until a very late 1 am! Dinner is great here, but Divin Ostilia is also perfect for a glass of wine and a light snack after visiting il Colosseo.

Felice a Testaccio - Rome

Felice a Testaccio

Felice a Testaccio: Best trattoria in Rome?

I was led to Felice a Testaccio by a recent NY Times travel article (dated 22 March 2009) which named it as the best trattoria in Rome. It also happened to be in Testaccio, away from the city centre, but a mere 10 minute walk from Aventino where I was staying in Rome, so how could I resist? Expectations ran high with the vote of confidence from the reputable publication as I entered the busy trattoria and asked for a table for lunch. The restaurant has been run by the same family since it opened in 1936, and they knew what they were doing as the food was exquisite. They have a different menu of Roman specialties for each day of the week, with a slight overlap. I ordered fettuccine ai carciofi (artichoke) and lamb, and was very, very satisfied.

Update: I returned to Felice in April 2010 for dinner and had a simply delicious meal, which included tonnarelli cacio e pepe. Felice has got to be the best trattoria in Rome!

Maccheroni, Roma - Apr 2010 - Rome

Maccheroni, Roma - Apr 2010

Ristorante Maccheroni: Tasty despite its name Maccheroni Review

Anywhere else in the world, I would avoid a restaurant with the name Maccheroni. But not in Rome, where if it had served bad food, it probably would not have lasted, at least among the locals. Ristorante Maccheroni serves delicious Roman cuisine, complemented by other regional Italian dishes. It is located at a very charming piazza, just north of the Pantheon, next to a couple of other popular restaurants and wine bars.

Roscioli - Rome

Roscioli

Roscioli Vineria: Wine Bar & Restaurant Near Campo de' Fiori Roscioli Vineria Review

This elegant multiple purpose wine bar is conveniently located near Campo de' Fiori. It is great for simply a glass of wine perhaps combined with a plate of cheese, or for a full meal at the dining room in the back. If neither works, you could purchase some cheese and meats from the salumeria at the front, and supplement them with olive oil or other gourmet food products from the stacks on the walls. Places like Roscioli epitomise beautiful dining in Rome.

Outside Piperno - Rome

Outside Piperno

Ristorante Piperno: Jerusalem Artichoke Specialty Ristorante Piperno Review

Hidden in a tiny piazza in Rome near the river in the old Jewish Ghetto, Piperno is one of the city's culinary gems. It is considered one of the best restaurants in Rome offering traditional Roman and Roman Jewish cuisine. Remember to dress smartly.

Favorite Dish: Piperno's signature dishes include carciofi alla giudia (fried Jerusalem artichokes) and fiori di zucca (zucchini flowers).... And try the sweetbreads too!

Ristorante la Campana - Rome

Ristorante la Campana

Ristorante la Campana: Rome's oldest restaurant? La Campana Review

With its unsubstantiated claim as Rome's oldest restaurant, Ristorante la Campana has naturally made it into many guidebooks. As such, it could easily have turned into a tourist trap. Fortunately, their traditional Italian and Roman dishes have remained delicious and authentic and are served in a classic-looking Roman restaurant with multiple dining rooms. If you do come here for an early dinner, you will likely see only tourists, but as the evening progresses, the locals will arrive at their normal dining hour of 9pm or later. The restaurant has a fixed menu, plus many daily specials including some traditional Roman dishes, such as carciofi alla giudia.

Favorite Dish: Note: la Campana is closed on Mondays

Teasing us with fresh artichokes - Rome

Teasing us with fresh artichokes

Trattoria da Giggetto: Another place for Carciofi alla giudia Trattoria da Giggetto Review

Teasingly displaying the freshest artichokes right in the shadow of the unbelievable Roman Portico d'Ottavia, Trattoria da Giggetto serves authentic Jewish Roman cuisine. The trattoria has been run by the same family for three generations and although overrun by tourists, it serves delicious dishes, including the most celebrated Carciofi alla giudia, i.e. fried artichokes (Jewish style). The food is extremely tasty and the ambiance is casual and friendly. Da Giggetto offers a similar menu to the nearby Piperno at materially lower prices, even if not as exquisite. My preference would be to try Piperno, but only if paying the higher price would not be an issue. Da Giggetto's outdoor seating, though, is a plus. Why not try both and decide for yourself?

Numbs before the name change - Rome

Numbs before the name change

Numbs: Restaurant & Wine Bar

Located a block away from both Piazza di Spagna and Via Condotti, Numbs is a perfect place to end a day after shopping in Rome's luxury shopping district. The small wine bar/restaurant offers great Italian wines, supplemented by plates of cheese and meats, as well as full pasta dishes. One of the tables set up outdoors is ideal in clement weather. No regrets here!

Note that Numbs used to be known as Shaki Wine Bar, but recently changed its name, but not its function.

Excellent Roman dishes in a simple setting. The trattoria is hidden in a dead ended street below the Lungotevere and is more popular with locals than tourists. Makes an excellent lunch stop after a morning at the Vatican.
