Antibes is a beautiful seaside resort on the Côte d'Azur with a history spanning 2500 years. The city was founded by the Greeks as Antipolis in the 6th century BC and remained as an important port through Roman times. Although little is now visible of its Graeco-Roman past, the old city of Antibes, or Vieil Antibes, has retained its mediaeval character. The charm of the city led many famous artists to spend time here, most notably Pablo Picasso, to whom a museum is dedicated. The old city has art galleries, a couple of museum and numerous restaurants, while next door, Juan-les-Pins has a lively night life. |
