The Grand Hyatt Cairo recently opened after taking over the old "Le Meridien" and building a new tower next to it. Located on the tip of Roda Island off the elegant Garden City, in the heart of Cairo, the hotel offers excellent views of the Nile and beyond, extending all the way to the Pyramids. It is also close to downtown Cairo and many of the major attractions, yet feels secluded given that it is on an island. The hotel offers all of the 5 star amenities that one would need, including a pool by the Nile as shown in the attached photos (yes, bikinis are allowed!).

If you are seeking a luxurious trip to Egypt, then the Four Seasons Hotel is the only place to stay. Yet you have a choice of two in Cairo! This tip is for the Nile Plaza one, located in Garden City (as opposed to the First Residence one, located in the Giza part of Cairo). I stayed at the Nile Plaza in April 2007 and the hotel proved to be as great as any Four Seasons around the world. The hotel is complete with restaurants, bar, spa, fitness centre, and a luxury department store. No complaints, but it is definitley more expensive than other five start hotels in Cairo.

The first of its kind in Cairo, le Riad, is a luxury boutique hotel located in the heart of Islamic Cairo. The idea of this hotel was made possible with the recent paving and restoration of the most important section of Islamic Cairo. A relatively modern (and once ugly) building was completely renovated and turned into this charming luxury hotel, decorated in local motifs and colours (see website for photos). It stands among some of the most majestic Islamic monuments dating from the 12th and 14th centuries. For those who have a strong interest in exploring Islamic Cairo more closely, then this unique hotel is well worth a try. The disadvantages are several, but obvious: there are no Nile views; it is expensive; and it is in a more crowded and poorer part of Cairo (but all of Cairo is crowded and poor).

Unique Qualities: I have neither stayed here nor have seen the hotel in person. A Cairene friend just told me about the opening of le Riad, so I was only able to judge it from its website. Nevertheless, I wanted to post it to my page to provide you with a different option, and also to allow me to remember its name for when I visit Cairo next.
