Khaybar Travel Guide: 13 reviews and 45 photos

Located about 1.5 hours north of Medina, Khaybar is another ancient oasis town in the Hijaz with a lot of history. Although not developed for tourism, Khaybar's historic quarter remains as it has for centuries, albeit crumbling. It was abandoned some 40 years ago for newly built modern facilities next door, which left us with a fascinating ghost town, dominated by a fortress over 1400 years old and surrounded by an oasis. Upon the arrival of Islam, Khaybar was a Jewish town inhabited by several Arab Jewish tribes (see local customs tips). Although they are long gone, the town's name remains in historic minds associated with the Jews of Arabia. Nowadays, visitors to Old Khaybar can wander freely through its abandoned streets and oasis, but the fortress is off limits as it is deemed structurally unsafe and is protected for archaeological excavation. If driving to or from Medina, modern Khaybar is a great stopping point for petrol and lunch, plus a quick tour of the old town.

Six-day tour of the Hijaz region of Arabia in January 2011:

Jeddah; Medina - Khaybar - al-Ula - Hegra/Mada'in Saleh; Jeddah - Mecca - Taif - al-Hada
