Starting our One Year Trip through Africa | Hidalgo loaded on dauphin Central Africa |
We spend a year traveling through the African continent. Morocco is our first country on this fascinating continent. With a modified 2x4 Ford Transit, that we called HIDALGO, we faced the challenge of our lifetime. He was our home and transportation via Western Sahara, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Niger, Lac Chad, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo I & II Angola till Namibia. Central Africa and the both Congos have been the most challenging and interesting countries. Angola was the big positive surprise. Ok, the have the most heavy potholes roads in Africa but you are rewarded with lovely people and landscapes hard to imagine. Back to Morocco: We entered at night, because it took hours to pass the customs. So we went to the next city, called TETOUAN. The streets were crowded with people and we had no idea where to go. "Oh Hotel Paris looks good!", Gisi happily shouted, detecting a hotel. It's not a good idea to stay on the road after sunset. The next day everything was fine: WE ARE NOW IN AFRICA! |
| Potseller Ketama Region Morocco |
| | So we went towards KETAMA, without consultation of a travel guide book. Mistake?!? No! Much more fun to find out by yourself, but stressful... Why? Everyone wanted to sell us pot. It started snowing, light disappeared and 30 kilometers towards the next village on a mountain road. At the evening we had to escape into a police station in Bab-Berret, because four cars tried to stop us by force. "It's just, because they want to sell you pot!", explained us the policeman who new all the Astrian football stars from the 70s. Hmm! But until today we don't know what these guys really wanted from us. Robery or really selling by force? We think they worked together with the police... |
| | Aoulade Dehou - A village like 100 years ago Next day we decided to stay at a small village: AOULADE DEHOU. Cherif a very nice farmer who spoke no French welcomed us. Then he went away and came back with Traik, the teacher of the village. Let’s speak French – not so easy with just four years learning French at school and not using it for more than a decade… We spend the Arabic New Year with Tarik and his colleague Radwon. Finally Tarik invited us to stay with him and his family in FES. Great! Then we headed on towards the Western Sahara to Mauretania.
