Symbols

by Applelyn - last update: Mar 11, 2006

A prince, San Nila Utama had discovered Singapore on one of his voyage. Just before he could reach the island, his fleet met a huge storm and he had to throw down his crown to calm the storm. When he landed on the island, the first animal he saw was a lion. Inspired, he named the island "Singapura"...Singa=Lion, Pura=Island. Thus the Merlion which had a lion's head and the tail of a fish (as island is surrounded by waters where fishes live), was taken as a symbol of Singapore. To get to this place, you can take the MRT to Raffles Place Station and get out from the One Fullerton Exit. Face the river, turn left and walk abt 1 minute to reach The Merlion.
The Durian

Esplanade-- Liu2 Lian4 Liu2 Lian2

It was supposed to look like two microphones to depict arts such as opera and theatre. But when Singaporeans scrutinised it, they decided unofficially to name it "The Durian". Most Singaporeans love to eat durians, why not name it after our "signature fruit". After all when the lion is the king of the jungle, it needs the king of fruits to complement it....But dont give the lion a durian......:P
Stamford Raffles

This island is perfect--says I

When Stamford Raffles landed on this spot hopefully he said "This is perfect place to work, live and play." (Please add in your own comma.)
:) The Statute of Stamford Raffles at the start of Boat Quay near Alexandra Bridge. A treaty was signed between the Tengkku and Sir Stamford and Singapore became part of British Colony. The old supreme court gives you a glimpse of British rule in Singapore.

How is Singapore today? Nice skyscrapers' ics. However, seeing these photos, i feel that the picture brings somewhat different image that those of New York or Toronto. I wonder why? Have a good day.

Hi Olivia, nice tips! The night safari and the enchanted woods definitely go on our to-do list! We only got to see the airport in Singapore, but that alone was quite amazing. Best wishes, Ash & Eve
