I had no idea that Transylvania would possess such buildings in such great shape. The condition of this fortified church is a testament to the passion some cultures have for their past. This structure is located a short distance east of Brasov and is very easy to find. It struck me that everyone from this village grew up with this history burnt into their psychi.
What a potent link to the middle ages. If you are in the area it is definately a "no miss".
This is an awesome example of life in the middle ages where peoples lived in fear of foreign invaders and built structures large enough to protect themselves. Of course it is not unique to Transylvania, but this is a beautifully protected relic. The building forms a ring around the church with four levels where each family had their own seperate room with it's own access to the outer defensive corridor where they could defend against attacks. Many rooms have exhibits in them with many objects from the old days. We were here in late Feburary and didn't have to pay anything to enter. My guess is we just lucked out, but no matter the cost it is certainly worth it. If you like old world, then you will love thePrejmer fortified church.
If a couple wanted a divorce they were first required to spend an extended period of time together in this little room. They were given one bed, one chair, one plate and one cup to share between them. If they could not sort things out in the alloted time then I guess they were allowed to seperate. They were given food through the little window on the right. I was fortunate to have a guide along with me otherwise I would miss out on a vast amount of information about the history of places I visited.
- Pros:Nice well preserved fortified church
- Cons:none really
- In a nutshell:great site for hostel or festival
