The fine city of Kaunas exudes a sense of intimacy less evident in its bigger sister Vilnius. Wandering the cobbled streets of the old town one gets a sense of a city that has accommodated rather than sold out to tourism. There is a sense of pride evident in its well dressed people, clean streets and the maintenance and use of its churches and public buildings. The damage of the Soviet era whilst still evident in some of the dubious constructions of the period is far outweighed by the period architecture that has survived remarkably well. Oh yes, and it's the home of Lithuania's very talented 'Zalgiris' Basketball Team! |

Pinat Tue Aug 11, 2009 10:05 UTC I'm not very familiar with Eastern European cities but Kaunas seems to be a pretty city to visit some day. Greetings from Ankara, Pinar | HORSCHECK Sat Nov 22, 2008 17:40 UTC Dez, interesting little page about one of my favourite Lithuanian cities. The post office building is indeed well worth a visit. |
