Pudong @ Shanghai, China

by ALouie - last update: Aug 11, 2007

I visited Shanghai China in September 2006. Pictures from my Shanghai Visit at My Shanghai Photo Album

Pudong is a district of Shanghai,China and is bounded by the East China Sea in the east and Huangpu River in the west. It has an area of 522.8km2 and a population of about 1.5 million. Pudong has become the China's financial and commercial hub. The district is also home to the famous Oriental Pearl Tower and Jin Mao Tower.

I visited Pudong on May 12, 2005 during a 4-day trip to Shanghai from Hong Kong before returning home. We had just visited The Bund in the morning and had taken a taxi to Pudong just awhile after. The first thing that caught my attention after I arrive was of course the Oriental Pearl Tower. The Oriental Pearl Tower stands by the bank of Huangpu River. It is in the centre of Lujiazui, opposite to the Bund which is famous for its grand buildings of various architectural styles. The tower is 468 metres high. It is the highest TV Tower in Asia and is the third highest in the world. I just viewed it from outside and didn't visit the inside til later at night the same day. Instead we spent the afternoon visiting the surrounding shopping malls and the Chia Tai Department Store just across the street. After dinner we went back to visit the tower. Got to see the tower all lite up at night. We then decided to go up the tower and visit the sight-seeing floor in the upper sphere 263 metres high. It is the best place to get a bird's-eye view of Shanghai.
After seeing Shanghai from the highest sphere, we came across the Shanghai Municipal History Museum which occupies the lowest ball of the Orient Pearl Tower and just before the exit. At first we didn't know if our ticket would allow us to enter, luckily we asked, otherwise we would have missed out on the museum. The museum tells the city's history, including a diorama of a main street from the 1920s. The museum documents 6,000 years, with sights, sounds and even scents of the colonial era. But the most recent exhibits, such as the lion dogs that used to guard the old Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank building.

The Jin Mao Tower was another attraction in the Pudong and is a landmark skycraper. The 88-storey tower is the tallest builing in China and one of the tallest in the world. The tower is also home to a shopping mall, restaurants, nights and the Shanghai Grand Hyatt.

Great Pudong tips and pics - I would note that the shopping mall in the Jinmao is nothing special though.
