Kuala Lumpur's premier shopping, dining and people watching street, in the heart of the city's "Golden Triangle" area, the center of modern Kuala Lumpur. The street is lined with sidewalk cafes where one can sit for a cup of coffee and watch the rest of the world go by. Or duck into one of the many shopping malls for air-conditioned bargain shopping. The Istana Negara is the official residence of His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Her Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong. This majestic building is nestled within a serene and beautiful 11.34-hectare compound with a variety of plants and flowers, swimming pool and indoor badminton hall. It is located at Syed Putra Road right in the heart of the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. The building has several halls for specific purposes such as the two main halls, the Throne Hall (Balairong Seri) and the Audience Hall (Dewan Mengadap) on the ground floor. The whole area is fenced up and the Royal Insignia of His Majesty is placed on each steel bar between two pillars of the fence. At the front of the Istana Negara, there is the main entrance which resembles a beautiful arch. On each side of the arch, are two guard posts to shelter two members of the cavalry in their smart full dress uniform similar to the ones at Buckingham Palace, London. Come nightfall on Saturdays, Merdeka Square is a veritable fairyland, thanks to the Sultan Abdul Samad building nearby on Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin. Designed by British architects at the end of the 19th century, the most photographed building in Malaysia was among the earliest buildings in Kuala Lumpur to bear the Moorish influence. Its arresting features are the forty-foot clock tower and the curved colonnades crowned with copper cupolas. It still retains its original purpose which is to serve the people of Kuala Lumpur; an administrative building in the 1900-s, this majestic building is today, the High Court of Kuala Lumpur. Opposite the Sultan Abdul Samad Building is Dataran Merdeka or Merdeka Square, an 8.2 hectare area of historical interest and it is this place where the annual National Day celebrations are held. A hundred meter high flagpole marks the spot where the Malayan flag was hoisted on the 31st August of 1957 signifying the independence of the country from British rule and also seen here in the Merdeka Square is a flat, round black marble plague which marks the exact spot where the Union Jack was lowered at midnight on the 30th August 1957. At the opposite end of the square is an inviting spot where visitors can relax amid soothing rushing waters of fountains, elegant colonnades and colorful beds of zinnias and marigolds. Beneath the square is Plaza Putra, an underground food, leisure and entertainment complex and tourists can try out various local cuisine over here.
