Olimpia definitely exceeded my expectations. The room was spacious, had a lovely view overlooking a garden, was exquistely appointed, immaculately clean, and very comfortable. A decent breakfast was also provided. Olimpia provides a terrific location. It is next to the Piazzale Roma (where the buses come & go to the airport) as well as very close to the Stazione Ferrovie (which is the arrival and departure point of trains servicing Venice). Another asset is that when you inevitably become lost in Venice, signs are always present to direct you to the Piazzale Roma which is next to your hotel. The hotel staff are helpful, friendly, and multi-lingual. While Venice is correctly described as an expensive city, this hotels rates were half the "less expensive city" of Florence's.
Unique Qualities: The Olimpia is also close to a Vaporetta station. Also, there is a supermarket (COOP) directly in back of the Vaporetta station. Venice restaurants are not really all that great and are highly predatory and inventively predatory (for example, the tourist menu may be reasonable, but they charge a cover, or absolutely roast you with the wine prices, including the alleged 'house wine'). To avoid an expensive and mediocre meal, go to the supermarket ( Billa is also located throughout Venice) and buy your goodies there. The wine is cheap, the food terrific and cheap. For example, a Bellini cocktail at Harry's (rip-off) Bar is $16. You can get a bottle of Bellini which will provide five or six Harry-sized cocktails for 4.47.
