Brunei - good coffee, deserted fun park...

by jmburnz - last update: Jan 5, 2006

Wild rollarcoaster!

Jumping off point for Sabah.

We only went to Brunei because the ticket was cheap (Auckland to London, Royal Brunei Airline) and we could stop over. I was really just a jumping off point for our real holiday in Sabah, Malaysia.

I actaully quite like Bandar, some really good shopping for us guys but terrible for women, and the coffee in some of the cafes was excellent.

We stayed in a quite cheap hotel about 10 minutes walk from the centre of Bandar. From here we visited an open air market where we were the only tourists, and caught a water taxi for a tour of the water village (highly reccomended). The big flash mosque is worth a look, esp at night when it's all lite up.

You should also hit the fun park. It takes about 40 minutes on a very slow bus (the speed limit is 50kmph in most of Bandar). We got there early and it was completly deserted! It was hot as hell so we hired a golf cart with driver to take us around all the best rides. Do the rollar coaster - it's one of the best! Later in the evening it will fill up (go at night, it's too hot during the day) with locals and tourists.

The funniest thing at the fun park was pulling up at the bumper car ride and there was this one Japanese guy going aroud and around all by himself! Crazy... we ran and jumped in two cars and immediatly RAMMED him hard! His wife was less impressed but he was just glad to have some comapny:)

Water village

Check it out, cost only about 30 Brunei dollars for an hour or so. Well worth it and it's nice and cool out on the water. Our driver was an excellent guide - it pays to talk to a few drivers to get a handle on their english skills (if you want english that is).

About 40 000 people live in the water village and the Sultan gives newly weds a house here if they want one!

It's a Muslim country.

So no drinking here and no nightlife except for some great places to eat. Brunei's not as boring as some people say but I wouldnt give it more than a few days.

Some of the buildings are fantastic and I hear there is some really cool jungle treaks and one of those tree house hotels a few hours south of Bandar.
