Romania is located in the South Eastern part of Europe and it has a population of 23 millions. The official language of the country in Romanian, the only Latin origin language in Eastern Europe.
The country is crossed by a mountain chain called The Carpathians. The Carpathians Mountains are a place full of mysteries, with castles, fortresses and churches that emphasize the beauty of the country's landscapes.
The Black Sea shore is 245 km long and it has lots of nice, white sand beaches.
Romania is also well known for its Danube Delta, region unique in Europe for the richness of the flora and fauna.
Romania has 4 distinct seasons, with cold winters and hot and dry summers. The best time to visit Romania is in the Spring and early Fall.
The capital of the country, Bucharest, is one of the ten most populated European cities, with a population of over 3 million people. There are 7 more large towns in the country that have a population of over 350 thousand people: Constanta, Iasi, Timisoara, Cluj, Galati, Craiova and Brasov.
Romania's villages include about 40% of the country population. Most of them are still preserving the old traditions and customs, so a visit to one of the villages is always a good idea if you want to learn more about the country and its people.
In addition to a large diversity of landscapes, Romania has an abundance of historical monuments, seaside resorts, natural spring water and thermal spas.
Romania has 9 distinct regions: Muntenia (this is the region where the capital of the country is located), Dobrogea, Moldova, Bucovina, Maramures, Transylvania, Crisana, Banat and Oltenia. Each one is unique and it provides for a great vacation spot, all depending on your personal preferences.
Dobrogea is the region located between the lower Danube river and the Black Sea, including the Danube Delta. The main cities are Constanţa, Tulcea, Medgidia, and Mangalia.
Moldova is also called the wine country. The main cities here are Galati, Bacau and Iasi.
Bucovina is a region well known for its churches. The city of Suceava is a great starting point for those who want to visit Bucovina's Painted Monasteries averaging between 4 and 5 centuries old.
Maramures is very well known for its wooden churches and The Sapanta Merry Cemetery. The landscape in this region is breathtaking especially during the fall when the color display in the Vaser Valley lets you speechless. The area is also well known for the wood work and wood carvings that artisans are practicing even today.
Transylvania is a region in the middle of the country, strongly associated with the Dracula's legend. It is a region rich in natural and tourist attractions (wonderful nature landscapes, medieval towns, thermal resorts, etc). A visit in one of the medieval towns is a must for every tourist.
Crisana region consists of the counties of Arad, Bihor and some parts of the Sălaj, Satu Mare and Hunedoara. It is bordered by Maramureş to the north, Transylvania to the east, Banat to the south, and Hungary to the west.
Banat is an area very well known for the city of Timisoara and for numerous thermal springs (the ones at Baile Herculane are very well known all over the world).
Oltenia region is made up of 5 counties and it dates back to 1st century before Christ. It is a land rich in waters, lakes and natural resources. The main city of the region is Craiova. Some of the works of the well known sculptor Constantin Brancusi can be seen in the region, in the town of Targu Jiu.
Since Romania has so many things to offer, I have decided to dedicate the Things to Do section to the churches and monasteries that you see all over the country. I have grouped them by regions, and I hope that you will like what you see here and you will decide to go and experience them first hand.
The majority of Romanians are Orthodox, but you can see other religions spread all over the country.
The statistics collected at the end of the 20th century show that in Romania there are more than 12 thousand holy places (churches, monasteries and chapels), out of which more than 450 are monastic settlements (about 216 monk monasteries; the rest belong to the nuns).
There are plenty of things to do and to see in Romania. For more information on those, check out my other pages about Romanian cities. Also, check out other people's pages about Romania and its wonders.
Have fun in Romania. It is a great country to discover, but you need to plan your trip right and make sure you know what to expect when you get there. Not all the places in Romania offer 5 stars accommodations :)
