A Tale of Two Cities

by monkeytrousers - last update: Jul 23, 2007

Buda & Pest

View of the Castle from Gellert Hill
Budapest in name is a relatively new city but the city has been there for centuries but in its guise as the three cities of Buda, Pest and Obuda. The three towns grew into each other so they decided to form one city in 1873.

Although a single city today, it is still possible to make distinctions between the areas in terms of their relative attractions. Buda contains the castle complex and Gellert hill, Pest houses most of the major religious landmarks and musuems whilst Obuda, slightly North out of town is famous for roman ruins. Buda and Pest are divided by the Danube river with Buda being the West bank.

A great set of tips here, very well detailed. Think Budapest may be a future destination for me. The architecture and museums look great.

Hi! Great tips and a lovely main photo! Yes, the crown jewels are replicas, the originals can be found in the Parliament`s cupola room (pity that you din`t visit it: it`s maybe the finest building in Hungary.
