Things To Do: Kunsthistorisches Museum
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • This fascinating and large museum house a collection of the Habsburg's treasures from the world of art and history. There are large collections of objects from Egyptian, ancient Greek, Roman and Middle ages. There is also an impressive collection of renaissance and baroque art including work from the likes of Caravaggio, Bruegel, van Dyck, Rubens, Rembrandt, Raphael to name but a few.

    Hundertwasser: Hundertwasser House
  • Tip Rating:
  • Friedensreich Hundertwasser was an architect who hated straight lines and firmly believed in a harmony between humans and nature. With this, he designed this odd looking and colourful building that is as crazy on the inside as on the outside.

The house is occupied so you cant visit but across the street is a gallery build in the same style and reflects the interior of it. Down the street a bit is an art gallery dedicated to Hundertwasser and his work in another crazy looking building designed by him.

    Freud Museum: Freud Museum
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Located in Freud's old flat this museum has lots of information relating to Freud. Dont come here expecting to see a reconstruction of his house because there isnt one. The only reconstructed room is the waiting room. The other rooms house items and information of Freud and his past as well as temporary exhibitions which Sigmund would have enjoyed.

    Schönbrunn: Schonbrunn: Palace
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Schonbrunn Palace was build by Maria Theresa and was the summer residence of the Habsburgs and is incredibly grand in style and appearence. The palace if build to the original plans would have actually been even more grander and larger than what it is today. The palace has over 1400 rooms and you will get to see a small fraction of these on a tour together with some of the Habsburgs and Maria Theresa's artefacts and paintings. There's even a painting of a large crowd near the end of the tour in which you can see a child Mozart.

I would certainly recommend coming to Schonbrunn if you come to Vienna. There are several differently priced tickets depending on how much you want to see of the site and palace but the gardens are free to walk around.

    Schönbrunn: Schonbrunn: Garden & Fountains
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • The gardens of Schonbrunn are extensive and combined with the palace the whole site is over four times larger in size than the Vatican City. There are some nice wooded areas but for me the best parts are the large fountains in the garden. Please check out the photos, I think these are most beautiful and grandest in the city.

    Schönbrunn: Schonbrunn: Gloriette
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • The gloriette is on the site where the original palace should have been had there been more money and time around. It is actually a memorial and offers a great view of the palace and the city.

    Stephansdom: St Stephen's Cathedral
  • Tip Rating:
  • Located at the heart of the city, this beautiful cathedral is one of Vienna's landmarks and is idenifiable from almost anywhere in the city. As you head through the entrance, the gate is called giant's gate, you immediately get an impression of the size and scale of the place.

Entrance is by donations but you need to pay to go up the tower or into the catacombs.

Oper / Staatsoper: Go to the Opera!
  • Tip Rating:
  • I thoroughly recommend that everyone who visits Vienna sets an evening site to go to the opera at the state opera house which is argueably the most important music venue in Europe.

There are performances on nearly everyday and tickets are really cheap. You can get seating tickets a couple of months in advance for as little as 9 euros from the website below or you can que up at get standing tickets a couple of hours before the performance starts for anywhere between 2 and 6 euros. Even if you dont like opera you are not spending much just to have a look around and see inside the place.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Stephansplatz & Graben
  • Tip Rating:
  • At the heart of Vienna is the Stephansplatz and Graben. Stephansplatz is a large open area famous for the cathedral of the same name and of the controversial Haas House opposite. Although a large glass building would appear on paper to be rather out of place in one of Vienna's most historical areas I think it works quite well with the prominant reflection of the cathedral showing on the glass.

The Graben was a marketplace during the times of Maria Theresa and was the centre point of Viennese life. Today there are a number of shops and cafes along the wide road as well as a couple of fountains and the beutiful Plague Column.

    Hofburg: Hofburg Complex: Michaelertrakt Fountains
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • To the far side of Hofburg entrance are some really nice fountains entitled mastery of the sea and mastery of the land. They depict exactly that. The Michaelertrakt (Hofburg entrance) is aptly grand and reflective of the palace as a whole.
