Pelee Island is the largest island in the Western Lake Erie Archipelago that extends from Ontario to Ohio and it supports some of the most ecologically significant areas in Canada. The island's unique ecosystems contain a number of rare animals and plants due to the island's location (latitude), geology (limestone alvar), and because it's an island on a large lake (climate, isolation). In fact, it is at the same latitude as northern California! A true treasure for nature lovers.

It is true that there is not much to do on the island apart from visiting the nature reserves and the winery, but it is well worth a day or two to explore.
