Interesting Tidbits about Marseille *Marseille is the oldest town in France: It was founded in 600BC as a trading post by Greek-Phoenician sailors and its original name was Massalia.
*Marseille was badly hit by the Great Plague in the 1700s. The plague was brought by ship in 1720 and quickly swept through the town and surrounding region, killing 100,000 people. Communication with the town was eventually cut off by local government in an attempt to prevent spread of the disease.
*Marseille is France's largest and one of its most important ports (Vieux Port).
*Marseille is the country's second largest city and the capital of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
