The chain of hills on which the towns of Great Malvern, Malvern Wells, West Malvern and Malvern Link are literally an outstanding feature of the English Midlands. Rising quickly from the rolling countryside the hills are a focal point and have been for millenia. The medieval fort is testament to an ancient strategic importance. There are many small quarries from which stone was taken to build most of the local houses through the 19th century.
The Malverns are criss-crossed with extensive pathways and there are car parks at various locations and various heights. Access for most people is easy and it is common to see families with young and old advancing on the highest point - Worcester Beacon.
To walk the length of the malverns is more of a challenge since, depending upon where you start and finish it is approximately 12 miles.
Being the highest point about means that Malvern provides a great viewing platform for worcestershire, shropshire, herefordshire, and right across wales. it is common to be able to see the bristol channel, welsh mountains such as Sugarloaf and Clee hill in shropshire.
