As the capital of Vijayanagara Kingdom - which was supposedly at its peak between 14th and 16th centuries - the ruins are a shadow of the splendor of the bygone days. It is supposedly one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Pretty good restoration work has been done on it and decent efforts are being taken to preserve it.
Despite the present day, the place still seems to be in the past - in a good way.
Plenty of nature and a beautiful river flowing through the town ends up letting you relax and get away from the humdrum of regular life. One could just take a walk around the town, climb down the boulders to sit by the river banks, or cross to the other side in a coracle.
I visited this place during the off-peak season. It was pretty quiet with just a sprinkle of tourists. Off-peak season is between June to July, i suppose. We heard that pretty much most places are closed when the river is high after the monsoon rains. Best would be to avoid it mid-July to October. The season starts again in November.

Nice tips!
Hampi looks like a nice place to visit. I will keep it in mind when I come back to India. Bhuvana, thanks for sharing.
Hampi is lovely! I think we visited around the same time this year. I was in Hampi a few days in June/July.
This is one of my favourite places on this planet!
