Macau, also spelt as Macao, became a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China in 1999. Before that, it was administered by Portugal as an overseas province.
Macau was divided into three main islands known as; Macau Peninsula, Taipa and Coloane. Besides the city itself, the islands are connected via bridges and a causeway border to Zhuhai. The significant movement of population between Zhuhai and Macau across the border makes the two feel like twin cities.
In the past, people would fly into Hong Kong and take the ferry across to Macau. Today, Macau is a hub to low-cost airline, so today direct flight is available to Macau.
