After spending a few days in the communist nightmare that is Agadir, we took a bus through the atlas mountains (and some fantastic scenery) and arrived 5 hours later in Marrakech. We took a taxi to our hotel which was bang smack right in the middle of the casbah. The casbah is a dirty smelly area with winding streets, chickens hanging up everywhere, people begging and selling and shouting and laughing. The smells! The sounds! It was amazing. And the HOTEL. It was beautiful! Down a smelly street, past a beggar, round a corner and through a door was the most fantastic hotel ever! (see hotel tips) A converted riad, courtyard hotel with pool, great breakfasts and a wonderful atmosphere! best holiday ever.

Apart from the casbah which can be a bit trying at times with children following you, the sook is the place to go in marrakech. miles of covered market stalls selling anything from jewlery to scarves to prayer mats to copper things......excellent. Then the market gives way to livestock - the smell of the chickens will never leave me! Disgusting.

In the medina (old walled part of the city) Djemaa el Fna (assembly of the dead!!!) is the massive square beside the souk near the Koutoubia Mosque is at the entrance to the souk.

There is so much to see in this city, and i will try to get tips up soon. We did it on a fantastically low budget., and spent a FORTUNE in antique shops buying bowls and carpets and.......a leopard skin (sorry guys)

See the massive palace and the new town, but the real charm is in the winding baking streets of the medina. AMAZING
