i haven't done this, basically becasue im sick of the whole politics of the place, but all visitors seem to want to take the mural tour around the protestant (shankill) and catholic (falls) areas to see the wall paintings. these people are actually really talented? why cant they get a propr job instead of being in terrorist organisations? worth a look, bring the camera.

botanic gardens belfast are a great place to spend the afternoon, if the weather holds up; further out there is lady dixon park, cairnburn park and of course stormont (see my travellog) all in the east of the city. park-walking is a popular pastime for dog owners; and you will always meet someone you know. my far the most spectacular is stormont with its mile long drive sweeping up to parliament buildings, carson statue, woodland walks, fabulous old trees and a great view form the top of east belfast and dundonald.

Things To Do: dundonald international ice bowl

Despite its name, the ice bowl, built in the 1980s is mostly an attraction for local kids from the age of 13-15 to hang out and be cool. however, if you can get past some of the dowdy decor, it is a really fun day out for all the family too. when it was built it was the bigget ice rink in the uk, and remains the biggest in ireland. there is bowling and glow in the dark bowing and indiana land - a massive jungle gym thing for kids. i used to liuuuurrrrve it. restaurant and cafe on site, as well as function rooms for parties. also home to the Belfast Giants and the Castlereagh nights - ice hockey teams who kick ass, although most are 3rd generation canadian immigrants with irish forefathers!!!

The Grand Opera House is one of the city's great signature buildings. Restored to its Victorian glory in 1980, it is a masterpiece in gilt and plush scarlet; the pièce de la resistance of this lavish interior being the elephants that support the boxes! (Pavarotti got his first break here.) The venue maintains its operatic traditions, with regular visits by some of the world's great opera companies. In recent years, the Royal Ballet and the San Francisco Ballet have both performed at this venue. Ticket prices vary per performance; check out the Website for details.
