Belfast (from the Irish: Béal Feirste meaning "The sandy ford at the river mouth") is our capital and has a (steadily growing) population of about 580,000 in the greater area.

Facts about Belfast

Famous for ??

1) The troubles - about 30 years of repeated violence from both sides of the community (catholic/nationalist and protestant/loyalist) due to the disputed status of Northern Ireland between the 2 sides. In 1972 violence reached its peak with 500 dead. In total over 3000 have been killed and our community (i refuse to call it two communities) suffered as a result, with segregation, discrimmination and no investment in Belfast from foreign or even many british firms.

2) Closely related to the above, Belfast is also famous for its colourful and interesting (and sometims downright scary!) wall murals depicting both sides of the conflict. In the relevant years of peace post Good Friday Agreement murals also discussother political development, such as the war in Iraq and proposed water charges in Northern Ireland!

3) The ill-fated Titanic built in Belfast which sunk off the coast of Newfoundland in 1912.

4) The Europa Hotel (a favourite of Bill Clinton) has the lovely honour of being the most bombed hotel in western europe (before it was the most bombed hotel in the WHOLE of europe including turkey and the balkans, however some balkan country now holds the widely coveted title. It was targeted 11 times by the IRA since the early 1970s and was refurbished every time (!)
belfast by night

so proud of my city now

gone are the days when we watched the news to see if dad would be held up at work by a bombscare, when handbags were searched at the city entrances. Belfast is now a young, vibrant city, rivaling many in europe but still retaining the charm, friendliness and hospitality the irish are known for!

south belfast - did not find this area until i was about 19! its a little walk from the city centre, and is now a bustling area with cafes and restaurants and a massive student population. you need to take a look at queens university which is beautiful before taking your pick of all the restaurants in the area. lots of boutiques and shops, and great nightlife. there's also the botanic gardens, off university road, so take a little stroll, (if the weathers good!)

Another thing thats really taken off in belfast since the peace process are numerous farmers or organic markets. St Georges market in the center of town is a completely refurbished market which now has a fantastic array of natural products, local crafts and produce. Further affield traditional market towns are embracing fresh farm foods. City Hall now boasts the continental market, which although smaller than many actual continental markets, is a good effort in a previously very closed community.

went shopping in the city centre and was rather impressed. the shopping is getting better and better, castlecourt could rival any mall, we are seeing even more and more british high street chains. the city hall dominates the main shopping area and looks fantastic with the christmas lights. plenty of new cafes and restaurants springing up, but it still hasnt lost its traditional feel. theres a new shopping mall being built, sould be ready 2007 i think in victoria square. and the city centre area is planning a 50,000 facelift to make it a focal point of belfast.

on the radio today it was announced belfast is attracting more and more tourists everyday! as i heard that i looked out the office window of my dads bank and a tour bus crammed with tourists drove past. i remember the days when those buses were empty save for a couple of journalists looking at wall murals! how times have changed! So much redefvelopment (long overdue) and companies dying to invest in Belfast, when beforehand thery were too scared to!

Catherine thanks for your message. My pics are all genuine and I always capitalise on the infrequent sunny days we do get here in NI. The beach shot was taken at Whitepark Bay...honest! The sand was so hot Best wishes to you. ronaldbarr
